Rally To Read 2012: Goxhill Primary School -KwaZulu Natal South

As we arrive at our second school of the day there's a large crowd to welcome everybody.  This small school has 9 teachers and about 213 pupils.

This area gets quite cold in the winter months and is the first Ive seen with each of the classrooms having its own log burning stove and chimney. The school principal leads the pupils as they march us through to the presentation area in the school.

The children sing as their parents watch and the Rally team starts to unload the educational equipment from the vehicles.

One of the school pricipals introduces everybody and we are given a book reading from one of the pupils.

Tammy tells the crowd about the Rally and what level of commitment they can expect over the next year. After, Nombulelo shows off the new books and toys to the delight of the pupils... a gathering of interested fathers watch.. along with educational items the Rally also brings much needed sports equipment which always gets a huge cheer from the gathered crowds.

The sponsors are then treated to a mixture of plays and book reading as the pupils take to the stage...One of plays was about a youth who gets sent to court after getting in trouble....the show is presented through a cardboard cut out TV Its brilliantly acted out by the gang who have some great costumes, while the girlfriend of the accused pleaded his case, the guy was talking like a rastaman in a Jamaican accent... It was such a funny show... well done to all..

After the entertainment is done theres the presentation of the pledge and certificate and then Its time for a guided tour of the classrooms and facilities.

I cant express how enthusiastic the kids are when It comes to this part of the rally. It makes them so happy to be able to show and tell others how they have progressed. Their learning and reading abilities after one year on the Rally To Read program show increased and significant improvement levels across the board.

not a bad little view from this school

After our fascinating tour we say our goodbyes...

Its about an hours drive back through some awe inspiring scenery to the Drakensburg Gardens Resort where we will be setting up camp for the evening, my return to Durban tomorrow... Looking forward now to seeing South Africa's biggest province, Northern Cape, next weekend.
