Friday Night - Saturday Morning | Rally Weekend 5 Nelspruit And Melanie Gate Of The Kruger Park, Mpumalanga

I fly out of Durban friday afternoon  about an hour to Kruger Mpumalanga Airport,  its an incredible view, the plane banks sharply as it approaches, dropping sharply through the mountain ranges with a heady descent onto the small runway strip nestled in the hills that surround the legendry Kruger National Park.

Hitching a ride with sugar industry fund for education (SITFE) guest Nathi Kunene, we're travelling about an hour to check into our base for the weekend, KwaMadwala Private Game Reserve.

Dinner at the boma of the lodge starts at 7pm, its a "Out Of Africa" scene, under a night sky that is absolutly peppered with stars...stunning!

6.20am The following morning im up for sunrise and breakfast,  looking out across the low lying land and hills a few of the team members take time out for contemplation before we hit the the road...

Merlina Hugo is our team leader for the day and explains the first step is to travel to the local golf club to load up our vehicles.

Headlights on, rally stickers on, vehicle number check....check...check?

A few phone calls later reveals someone had overslept..! Not good considering our schedule..
Eventually after a wait the culprit joined his respective team and we could finally leave...

as we arrive at the golf club everyone is busy preparing vehicles....

its a hive of activity loading and shuffling the equipment around so it will fit the respective team vehicles....  5 teams with 2 schools, each with its own specific items.... its hectic!

A prayer is said for the journey as the team talks begins, a sharp reminder to all of the amount of road traffic accidents in this region. Theres just time before we head off for a brief explanation of routes and Rally etiquette from our leaders and McCarthy host for the day Albert Adams.

Its about 40 minutes drive, should of been 30 but one of the Shell team had forgot to fill with fuel ha ha. ha.. Nevermind ehhh, it was a chance or maybe a ploy to grab a fruity roadside snack before we got to our first school. Merina calls ahead to the school principal to let them know we're running ten minutes late.
